Depends upon how well know you are. If you are Michael Jackson, I doubt it.

Pretty good answers so far but no one has asked why you got into the profession in the first place. Was acting a long time goal for you or did you just fall into it like a lot of "discovered" actors? (walkjing down the street and spotted by a talent or casting agent type thing) If this has been a long term goal for you don't give it up because of some adverse publicity. For every "famous celebrity" there are 100 people looking to get the "goods" on them so they can have their 15 minutes of fame for revealing it. Can you imagine wanting to make a living by hurting people? They are to be pitied not feared and should not have any influence on your decision.
Do you enjoy your professionor is it just a job? Role wise, are making progress, standing still, or slipping back? Most importantly, are you happy, (in general), with your life? If not, change it, but, if you are, don't let the "bottom feeders" dictate the outcome of your career.

Actors leave the business all the time. They often find success in other fields...just look at Ronald Reagan. Your skills will serve you well anywhere, even if you have to learn a new skill set.
If you are well known, there will always be some interest in what you are doing. Someone is bound to stop you on the street and say "Weren't you so and so on that show?" However, you won't be hounded like when you were active in the business.

People generally tend to not focus on famous people who have left the limelight. So if that is what you want then you may just get it. I would never want to be famous. I don't envy that type of attention. Oh and to answer your question about how do I view actors who have left the business; I say good for them. I have quit many jobs and I have been satisfied with my decision. If I came across a famous person, I can't imagine that I would treat them any differently. After all, just because I would recognize them doesn't mean they know who the hell I am. I would leave them alone.

How do I view them? I forget about them unless I happen to catch an old television show or movie they were in and then I might say to myself, "Don't see him/her anymore, wonder what he/she is doing, now."
If you are famous and want to fade into obscurity to regain your privacy, don't announce that you're leaving the business and don't fire your agent right away or do anything else that might attract media attention. Just let your current contracts run out, don't renew them and don't enter into any new ones.
If you're so famous you don't have the luxury of leaving so quietly, you could let your publicist "leak" that you're taking a break from actiing to spend more time with your family or enjoy the fruits of your labor or to develop a project you have in mind.
Good luck to you!

Normal people don't care if you used to be an actor so long as you have other skills.
The 2nd part of your question is confusing: If people are bothering you for some reason then I don't think anyone will care if you say "but I'm not an actor anymore!" You're still that guy that did that thing, whatever it was

It is kinda up to you. If you talk to the public about why you are quitting, then you are likely to be more loved.
I like to see an interview on tv that is heartfelt.
