"CreoleGirl", there is nothing wrong with explosives....some may even consider pyrotechnics a hobby if done properly, and by no means does this interest require "professional help".

However, if you have to ask then you probably should not know in the first place. Explosions, be that "mini" or big can be quite dangerous. The first step in keeping the activity safe is that you know what your are doing, and by this, I mean knowing the science behind it. Apparently, you do not.
I am going to advice against YOU playing around with explosives, but not necessarily the practice in general.

It is people who don't know what they are doing, the people who do not practice all the safety needed are the ones who blow themselves up. By this I don't necessarily mean killing themselves in a giant atomic blast, but rather, blowing fingers/hands off, destroying property, and a like....these people give others a bad name, they force additional government restrictions on products used to make these explosive items, they make life harder for legitimate people in general.

I could tell you but it wouldn't be wise.

We've blown up all manner of household things and made explosives from them (legally and under carefully controlled conditions) and some of the results are quite frightening. Just about every household contains enough material to blow itself away.

Anyway, as others have said - the Coke and Mentos thing is a good one. Check this video... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3673360343168243565

the classic is a volcano by pouring vinegar in to baking soda . . . my son used up a whole bottle of white vinegar once, he was having so much fun, then filled it with water and put it away cuz he was worried i'd be mad . . .but vinegar is cheap.

Even better, one time i was making tomato soup. Tomatos are really acidic (I use pureed stewed tomatos), so i usually put in a pinch of baking soda, then thicken with corn starch mixed with a little water when the soup is hot. Well, I accidentally mixed in 1/4 baking soda instead of corn starch, and made an exploding tomato soup volcano . . . very funny . .

positioned a number of "the works" drain stuff in a 2 liter bottle then upload some tinfoil, positioned the cap on, shake it up a touch, throw it and pay attention. not particular how many of the works to position in the bottle for staggering consequences, so attempt and function interesting. p.s. even as this works it motives a noisy bang!
