Try and get a job within the uni, bars, shops or security. They're very student friendly and won't make you work too many hours. Don't worry too much about what to take with you, sure you can visit home and collect anything else you need. If you're working this summer use the money you earn to buy clothes etc, money will be tight even with a student loan because once you've paid your rent there won't be too much money left. Just remember your glad rags, a clothes horse and a toastie maker. You'll have a great time!!

You can work in the summer instead of part time during the course. That said, in the first year, you'll probably be fine doing some part time stuff alongside the course.
Don't be a lazy cow though - try not to waste your time sleeping and lying around. You don't have to be studying all that time, just make sure you get out and about a lot. The lifestyle is a great experience - made much better if you put some effort into actually experiencing it.
Edit: And sign up to lots of clubs and societies at the start. You can always drop them later - the sign-up is about giving yourself options and chances to experience things.

Enjoy yourself and try to get a job inside the uni like at the pub, club, student office or similar, that way they understand if you can't accommodation in the local area during holidays and work is nearby and won't interfere with lectures etc.
Take as much as you can so you can work and be comfy! The homier the better, put alot of effort into the social aspects at the very beginning as you'll need all the friends you can get!

Go to classes. Listen to Indie Music. Drink a lot. Don't go to classes as much. Get a student loan. Smoke weed all day. Go out every night. Get the clap. Can't be bothered with classes. Resit 1st year. Get a crap part-time job, fail 2nd year, resit 2nd year. Get another student loan. Eventually graduate. Sign on for job-seekers allowance. Smoke weed all day. Listen to Indie music.

Work hard, learn as much as you can, do not waste time with too much drinking, partying and "social life", and keep focussed on your future. Be always friendly, helpful and polite, and keep an open mind on everything.
Good Luck!

depends on which country/area/university - not everything is the same everywhere (although a lot might be)
