Very good question. I would say that you have done some research. First off, I agree with you about the MLM. Although I have never worked an MLM, my understanding is that you are basically a salesperson, doing repeat sales. That is fine if that is your cup of tea. As for the money part of it, my wife and l started our business for about about $550.00(factoring in s&p and state taxes.) So if you have 2 grand.........put that money back in your pocket. The bottom line here is....do your due diligence. Ask some of the following questions: How long has the company been in business (dont get sucked in with the ground floor opportunity nonsense) question the compensation plan thoroughly, what is their reorder rate? (that is a biggie) You want a company that is not MLM (as you stated in your question) been around for more than 5 years, compensation plans works on residual income, and for example a reorder rate of 95% year in, year out. That will definitely weed out the pretenders.
Good luck!!

So, you're open to the idea of working from home for additional streams of income that you can create for yourself? There are many good ones out there.
Rich Dad Poor Dad "Business School" by Robert Kiyosaki says it's the best way to become rich and find what you're looking for in life. They're all life changing and you just never know! Check them out with the Better Business Bureau as well! Make sure they're legit and have no ill complaints as well as the ratings of the company.
I got started at http://www.bedavis1.mywayout.net/ ! If you like what you see, you fill out the form for more information. It's definitely a must see! Check them all out and find what you think you'd really like!
Almost all of them have start up fees of $50-200 and some are higher because you're getting products as well.
Good Luck on your endeavor!

Jay, Are you up to a little private conversation? I am a successful Network Marketing agent. I love this industry as it applies to "real" products and substantial companies (not the pretend businesses) I am curious about why you would exclude all MLM opportunities from consideration. You would be able to get the largest long term return with the least cash investment. Also in many case you are helping people solve real problems (in my case - serious health issues). Please write to me and help me understand why you are less impressed with this marketing format. Bruce at boatclub@go.com . Its just friendly conversation - no arm twisting, I promise!
