I remember once my grandma told me:
- You know, our Tom is actually a female cat (Tom lived in her garden, was definitely male and had a 'girlfriend' who had recently delivered three little Toms in her neighbours' garden)
- What makes you think so? - I asked, totally amazed.
- I found out that he has nipples - was the answer.
- But all tomcats have nipples! - I exclaimed.
My grandma wouldn't give up easily:
- He has six of them! - she said, gave me a triumphic look and walked out of the room to end further discussion.
I checked Tom - he had eight which is the regular number of nipples for a cat. My grandma can really surprise me sometimes with the unusual twists of her imagination:)
I know this is not an answer to your question but I thought this real funny story wasn't absolutely irrelevant. I hope you enjoyed it :)

Genetics. And men have milk glands as well. There is a tribe in Africa where the men and women both breastfeed. Men can produce milk with enough stimulation; check out male lactation on the web for more info.
So they are not just decorations, plus the chest would look funny all bare without them.

Many of reasons. titty twisters, peircings, asthetic appeal. But scientifically its because we all start out in the same mold as a fetus. All human beings have nipples while we are in our mothers. Females just develop breasts and males don't. But the nipples are still there even if there is no genetic use for them.

Why do men have nipples? To prove they're mammals, obviously. The distinguishing features of mammals, from whales to mice, are two: having hair and suckling their offspring. This gives us the notorious sentence that demonstrates why our pronouns need overhauling: "Man is an animal who suckles his young."

the real question is: why do WOMEN have nipples. and that ones oobvious- God knew that if men had real boobs.... uugghhh!
anyways... God made MAN first, then took woman "out of man" (that's what "woman" means). so men had the nipples first, thankfully, God decided to let the women feed the babies, though!
help at all??

At conception, all fetuses (feti?) are "female" but some develop into "male" during their development. They retain their nipples though...don't ask me why

Well... in ancient Greece and Rome men used to breastfeed. Odd, but true.
