i actually totally agree with you. what is in the point off that? i think they should raise the legal age to have sex and marry to age 18 as the person or persons involved would be more mature by then

This has come together because the government reacts, sometimes short-sightedly to public opinion. And if I might quote agent K in MIB, "A person can be quite intelligent, but people are dumb..."

And the public is of course the people. So we have many laws that don't make logical sense.

Clearly democracy isn't the best solution, but we've already seen that communism doesn't work either and dictatorships may be efficient if there is an intelligent dictator, but all to often the dictator becomes corrupt, if he isn't already, and humanitarian attrocities ensue.

Perhaps we should have a democratically elected board of intelligent and humane leaders who have more accurate methods of determining a just legal system and a global organisation to monitor them.

Well thats a regional or a problem in a few countries that 16 or below years old can have sex with their parent consent, not in all countries. But 18 years is generally recommended age in most countries as the age bar for adult movies ad comes under law. Hence law is to be strictly followed.

This is a point I've made many a time. When I reach 16, I'll be able to have sex, get married, move out, go to work, start a family... But I can't watch some movies. Wha? It makes no sense. We're responsible/mature enough to make our own lives, but we can't watch certain movies or drink alcohol? I have a friend who is engaged and, the moment she reaches 16, she is planning to marry her now 23-year-old fiancé (She is 15). However, I believe it is based on very old-fashioned beliefs, where females were once encouraged, by their fathers, to be married and with child as early as possible. Basically, the law needs a huge modernised upheaval. And soon...

I genuinely have heard of situations the position inspite of consent now and again you want to have a "solid reason" to be married alongside with having a baby mutually or terminal ailment or something, as you're purely 16 it would want to arise that you've been with eachother even as it wasn't legal. Being that you've been purely 14 and he became 18. Why do not you purely wait yet another couple of years once you may have the funds for to have something more beneficial particular and also you could legally toast your own wedding ceremony? solid success

Because whilst some 16 year olds may be mature enough to get married, others are certainly not, that is why you still need parental consent.

Movie certification has to be generalised for an age group and not take into account the maturity of some individuals.

This is confusing as to why there are "double standards" so to say. Your question brings to mind, something I've wondered myself. Why is it that a young man or woman can join the military at 18, sometimes 17 and have the responsiblity of carrying a gun and or firing one during war but cannot legally consume alcohol? I understand the reasonings of why the drinking age in most places is 21 but does this makes sense?

They can have sex and get married because they have parental consent. If they go to an 18 and up rated movie they can see it , with parental consent as well so it kind of makes sense but I see what you mean. Society is wierd and are a lot of double edged swords and double standards.

The responsibility for enforcing control lies with the parents in the case of sex/marriage, but it rests with the state in case of entertainment.
Nobody gives a hoot about film ratings. Nowadays, kids above 9 have eaten of the apple, so to speak. But the 'state' still has to save it's ***; hence the certification.

Frankly Nicola, why do we need the adult films they now show in theaters?? After about 11, most kids already know about sex. One of the great problems in the world is the number of children being born out of wedlock, which means they have no father rolemodel as they grow up. So the movies simply fuel this trend by showing us films of people fornicating.

After the first time, there aren't any secrets.
