Any laptop will work fine if your just using internet explorer of Firefox to take a class online. Just be sure you have a high speed internet connection. Now if you want my personal opinion after working on desktops and laptops over the years...

STAY AWAY FROM DELL!!!!
HP's are OK.
Gateway and emachines are worse than Dell.
Toshiba are the best and most reliable. Also the most expensive. (you get what you pay for)
Macs are useless for the general public unless you're a complete idiot or doing graphic arts.

There that's my 2 cents.

HP/Compaq. Man. I see this question a lot so I'm not even going to go into why you shouldn't buy the others. HP/Compaq has good warranties, good deals.

Quickly

Sony Vaio = Break a lot.

Dell = 90 day warranty blows.

Acer = Cheaply made.

Toshiba = Pricey.

Macintosh = Pricey.

Oh also, my bro-in-law just ordered a Compaq as well for school. heh.

I have a Compaq R4000, and love it. (desktop processor in it. heh.)

My friend has the HP equivilent and also loves it.

HP/Compaq can be found in many major Businesses. Coca Cola contracts with them, just off the top of my head.

Customer Support is OK, good thing is, you probably won't need it.

It is not very powerful I can tell you that much. It also depends on what operating system is on the computer and what you plan to do with it. If you plan to play hardcore games on the computer then this one won't work for you. But if you plan on browsing the net, checking your e-mail, word processing, printing, etc. then it will be perfect for you. Here is a list of the default amount of memory (RAM) a computer should have based on operating system: Windows XP (512 MB) Windows Vista (1 GB or 1000 MB) Windows 7 (2 GB or 2000 MB) Windows XP/Vista/7 64-bit (4 GB+ or 4000+ MB)

My recommendation would be the MacBook with the 2.0 Ghz Core Duo and a 60 gb hard drive. The Superdrive writes both CDs and DVDs but is not available in the stripped down basic model. It has Bluetooth and Airport Express built in, comes with 512mb memory, but works more efficiently with 1 gb. You can get it with a High gloss or low gloss screen, which ever you prefer, and it can boot to Windows with Boot Camp. White case is standard, black case cost more.

HP, Dells for cheapest Price but HP makes the best lineup of laptops out there. We have used both and I prefer HP for quality, we had a lot less problems with the HP's they seem to be built with higher qaulity motherboards, power supplies and packaging, in general...

You did not say what is the subject. If it is art, engineering, architecture etc. consider a Mac.

Other wise a Dell or Gateway with intel dual core will be good. The actual model will depend on your budget.

You can go to the HP website and create your own laptop! I really trust HP, I own a computer repair business and HP has the best service and is very reliable. Go to the web link below, pick your model and create your own options or check out the options that come standard.

I use to take classes online. I used a sony vio, but those are a little pricey. If you don't have extra money to spend and you want to keep it on the cheap side, i would recommend a Toshiba.

gateway is my choice - however, good memory and the internet connection would make the most difference than a specific computer model..
