There isn't one simple answer`. There were many things that caused the Soviet Empire to collapse, just as with the Roman empire.
One of the chief reasons the Soviets didn't make it is because of their desire to be the strongest nation on earth. Most of the resourses of the nation went into arms production. They produced tons of arms for the Army and Navy, but very little for the ordinary citizen, who had to pay for all of it.
Living standards dropped, the people saw little reason to struggle while their standard of living kept dropping.
Farming and food production was kept under control of the government. All land belonged to the government. The farmers worked as laborers and managers. They had no incentive to work hard for personel profit, so farms produced far less than their full potential.
All the large farms were managed by those who had the most political influence. Knowlege of farm production was secondary to them. To avoid work that they were never compensated for, the smaller farmers often burned the seed provided by the government, and blamed poor weather for the poor crops.
Of the food that was produced, much spoiled because of the lack of an efficient distribution system. The army needed trucks. Civilian needs were a very distant second.
Government corruption was so bad that it couldn't be hidden from the citizens. Without the backing of the masses, a government is on very shaky ground. Progressive people can't be controled like farm animals. Sooner or later they realize what's being done to them, and it all falls apart.

well it began when Gorbatchof (i'm not sure with the speeling of the names cause it's all russian names ) took control of the USSR (united soviet social republic) and the ppl were fed up with **** of the marcesisem **** ((that in the end the prosperity will be for the workers and then they won't have to work after then) and started to enjoy the capitalism the west offerd (USA) and some generals decided to control thier own country (Afganistan-Ozpakistn-pakistan-Yougslavia......etc)so they left the union and became presdients of thier own country and afterwards the rest decided to follow them and the government of the USSR was so weak so it fell apart...

there became a paper written through the Soviets contained in the 1950's (sorry i do not have a link. choose I did) that defined their plans on defeating the Democratic international locations, exceptionally the U. S.. One step became to infiltrate one or both political activities and finally take over. McCarthy would were forceful, yet that doesn't mean he became incorrect.

I think it was because of totalitarianism, some say it was communism but I don't, communism is just communal living in other words community living were every one shares the fruits of life which you have on many scales thru out the world, totalitarianism is total control of ones life and no one likes that heck most people don't want you knowing much about their life and sticking your nose in. Would you want someone telling you were to work, were to poop, were to vacation, no you wouldn't

They spent all their money trying to out-do the U.S. Eventually the people had nothing left for the government to steal.
