You could compare it to the fall of the Roman Empire. Although the Roman Empire fell slowly over the course of hundreds of years, the Soviet Union gradually collapsed over a few decades. Since the late 1970s the Soviet Union slowly sled into oblivion. What caused it to finally fall is a matter of some debate, but there are some big reasons no one can dispute. For one, the military was only a shadow of its former self, and the Soviets had just had a nasty taste of what insurgent militias could do with the proper backing in Afghanistan. The second reason could have been the economy. The great steel mills that churned out hundreds and thousands of tanks in the 40s, 50s and 60s were falling into disrepair. The economy could no longer properly provide for everyone and shortages were common. The standard of living was incredibly low compared to other surrounding countries. Another reason was most likely the corrupting bueacracy of the government. Much like the late Roman Empire, everything was an empty gesture. The Soviet Union had become a sort of empty husk, the military still had some bite, but everything else was just useless and people were fed up with it. It was inevitable that any small push in any direction would make the whole thing collaspe onto itself. What went wrong no one really knows. It could have been the bloody early years which embedded a feeling of distrust and hostility towards the government. It could have been the Stalin era. Although Stalin turned the USSR into a military powerhouse, the standard of living, common goods and civil rights were non-existant. In the end it was the same thing that toppled governments before and after, it fell into disrepair, no one cared and the people took things into their own hands.

What you describe is mostly consequences of Gorbachev's lousy administration. But even with those temporary problems the country was still strong and united. Apart from Baltic countries which were never supposed to be a part of the Union, no other republic wanted independence. In few years before Belavezha Accords, Ukraine held two referendums and people voted against separation from SU.
The collapse itself was decided by three people who didn't have proper authority and were simply driven by lust for power.
Soviet Union dissolution was a tragedy for millions of people and caused many military and inter-ethnic conflicts, some of which are still active. 2014 Ukrainian crisis would be less likely to happen if the nations weren't separated by a small group of individuals who only cared of their own good.

There are many reasons, mostly internal pressures within the Soviet Union for political change. The popular Republican reason is that the Reagan administration forced the fall by outspending the Soviets with "Star Wars" and other expensive military programs so that they couldn't compete with us.

Economy. The Soviet Union could not keep their people happy - and they were getting the idea about living standards elswhere - and keep the military running. Once the sattelite states were going democratic and opening the Iron Curtain the rest followed automatically.
