I'm interested to know the history of how the "Queen Mary" was finally so named? Was it based on someone of royalty or was it named after Mary the mother of Jesus according to Christianity? Or was it named for some other reason? In either case, is there a history behind the choosing of the name, and if so is it possible to know or find out? thank you. kris.

It's named after a Queen of England, ruling at the time. Same with the Queen Elizebeth II

it was indeed named for the ruling queen of England at the time ( 1930?).....however there is more to the story;
She was one of the Cunard Line's ships...the biggest grandest fastest ocean liner to ever have been built.......and ALL of Cunard's ships names ALWAYS ended in "ia"......Lusitania, Britania, etc.......
Before she was named, the Chairman of Cunard went to the King of England, asking permission to name the ship "after the greatest Queen England had ever known". The Chairman meant Victoria, the Kings mother. The king thought he was talking about his wife, Mary.

One does NOT correct the King Of England.

Hence the ship was named "Queen Mary", breaking a100 year Cunard tradition.
