It was written about 2,800 years ago!
During the classical and Hellenistic times it was broadly used by people of letters, like for drama, tragedy, etc.
In 1942, Columbus read the Odyssey and visit the Greek island CHios to find out the Truth about the existence of the great continent beyond the "Atlantic Sea"
About 110 years ago, some archaeologists following the Odyssey and Iliad found cities and sites mentioned in the poem!

It was written around 700 BC and described the events of, I i am not much mistaken, 1200 BC.
It "flourished" (i. e. was popular) practically ever since, especially before the fall of the Roman Empire and after the Renaissance, when Hellenic art again began to be popular.

During the Hellenistic and Roman periods it was very popular, but was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. It made a comeback in the Renaissance and is still popular reading today.
