I want to purchase a table-type saw in order to make small wood objects with, BUT it also allow me to cut wood that would at least be 3-4 inches deep. Would anyone recommend a particular type of saw that would give me precision cuts?

I have heard of electric Miter saws by Hitachi, for example.

Are there any other kinds that would do a similar job. Money is a concern, as I would like to keep it under $200.

Thanks!

A table saw might be your best bet since it can rip wood (cut it length-wise), cross-cut it to length, and mitre it (cut angles).

The Ryobi BTS20R sells for $199-229 depedning where you live in the country. The favorable expert reviews that its received convinced me to purchase it, and I'm glad I did. A nice feature of this saw is that its portable (has a built-in stand with wheels). To get a better saw, you'd have to spend at least twice as much - which just wasn't worth it to me.

I have a dewalt compound miter guage and I can cut 4x4's with ease. I can also cross cut up to 12 inches. Great for angle cuts and the fine cut blade makes a smooth edge cut every time. I mainly use my table saw to rip long or large pieces of wood. As someone already mentioned you get what you pay for, it sounds like you plan on using it a lot, a good tool is an investment that will last you decades if you care for it. A miter guage also has the convience of portability.

O.K.....Under $200.00....If you need to rip the wood; You will need a table saw. (make cuts parallel to the grain of the wood.) If all of your cuts are across the grain a miter saw will do fine. I'm not sure you are going to find a Hitachi for $200.00. You can get a 10" miter saw at sears for $100.00.
You indacate that you need a depth of cut of 4". A 10" saw is not going to do this. Perhaps a band saw, but the cuts will not be as accurate. A 12" cabinate model table saw would do everything you are asking, but it will set you back about $4,000.00.
After carefully considering all of the options...You need a couple of good old fashioned hand saws. One for ripping, and one for cross cuts. They are very accurate, will handle any size stock, and are within your price range.

Under $200? That might prove to be trouble buying new. I bought my Ryobi table saw new for around $320 and it will cut anything with the right set-ups.

You get what you pay for. Under $200, you'll get a cheap flimsy thing. If you really can't spend more, try a pawn shop.
