Cos when things were simpler we had Formula 1 (f1) as the ultimate in motor sport, then feeder formulae with Formula 2 (f2) and Formula 3 (f3). Nowadays, although Formula 3 is still going, there are so many different "under" formula (F3000, Palmer Audi etc) that it's all getting rather confusing.
Basically the name stuck from years back lol.
