Only two things are needed. You must act as a friend, and you gotta pick the right people to be friends with. I've had friends for over 40 years, and I'll know them until one of us dies.

Friendship is a peer level relationship. The rule for maintaining it for a long time is written there in haven. Just lok above and see how the stars and planets continue with there relationships from time immemorial till date. You have to find out the right distance which will not make you too close or too far. Both of you should get each others presence when they need it and should be able to find a private space when they fell like it. I think that is good enough.

Ive had the same best friend since before Kindergarten (40 yrs). we had alot of common interests. You laugh at their lame jokes and maybe even add 1 or 2 yourself. You cry with them when they cry. You are there for each other in good times and bad. You share your favorite clothes (if they fit). You laugh about everything. You tell each other your dreams, your most deepest darkest secrets and make them pinky swear for life not to tell. You never steal each others boyfriends. You always defend your friend in everything. And when you lose a loved one as we both did (mothers) let them know their sorrow & loss is yours too and make sure you put flowers out every year on your "moms". And if life goes to fast with daily living make sure you still call or write but set aside 1 day a year to visit each other in person even if you are miles apart and laugh like you were kids again. 40 years & still friends =)

Give them freedom, free of choice, and keep trusting, and respect them for who they are. Do not doubt, neither in your heart nor with your questions, believe everything will work out and it will.
