I know a lot of Beatles fans are going to jump on me for this question, but musically I think Zep takes the cake. Also, the Beatles sounds like "oldies" music, Zep withstands the test of time....

Both.

Two different types of bands.

Two wildly different experiences - for members of the groups.

Two different audiences - to a significant degree, anyway.

They both imploded, more or less, in their own ways.

As for "The Best" - they are 2 different genres, IMO.

The Beatles were in the public eye and had to deal with their 'image'. Zeppelin was goofed out on whackballs.

As a former stoner, I feel I have the authority to say that the Beatles may have 'experimented' with the hippy drug thing - even w acid - whatever. Reality interspersed with The Walrus and Lucy in The Sky, etc.

Zeppelin was more along the lines of The Doors. They didn't experiment with drugs. They may have occassionally experimented with sobriety / reality - but probably not intentionally.

If you are Jim Morrison taking acid for a week straight, you don't have to write songs promoting your image as part of the 'counter-culture'. Same with Zeppelin. The Beatles - They Doth Protest Too Much, in a matter of speaking.

But, I digress.

I don't know.

Willie Mays or Ty Cobb ?

Ginger or Mary Ann ?

Sean Connery or George Lazenby ?

Raquel Welch or Jessica Alba ?

No one can top the Beatles.

Led Zeppelin stole every thing they did from a lot of dead black men. Seriously, they owe Lead Belly and a lot of others a lot of money. Plagiarism is a crime, but those assholes got away with it. I don't know why that doesn't bother more people. They didn't do anything original or interesting. Just crotch rock and ripped off songs. And Robert Plant has one of the most annoying voices in rock and roll.

For the record, I do like Jimmy Page as a guitar player, but for me, his best work was with Donovan, when he was a session drummer, and when John Paul Jones arranged and produced some of Donovan's work. Never like Bonham's cave man style drumming. I just think there was too much hype with Led Zeppelin, maybe it's because I was never into Dungeons and Dragons or Lord of the Rings, and because if I wanted a blues song, I'd listen to Leadbelly or Lightning Hopkins, you know, real blues music, the way nature intended.

Beatles.

They had a much stronger influence on our culture and our music. Think about it:

1. Helter Skelter: need I say more?
2. First band documentary
3. Mop top hair (coming back ?!?!) was long for its time
4. Sgt. Pepper album
5. Flanging technique: two copies of the same sound are overlapped and time-shifted slightly
6. Use of strings and bass in their music was highly innovative
7. George Harrison was first musician in a pop group to use a sitar.
8. Pushed the length of their songs past the normal 2-3 minutes to 4-5 minutes
9. Promoted musician written and performed material
10. Those groovy, gray collarless suits

Oh it's got to be Zeppelin. Boggie with Stu off Physical Graffiti is my theme music Cat! The Beatles are great but there is no comparison between them.
