Why is our national symbol the same as thiers? Why is our system of government the same as thiers? Why do football stadiums look like the collaseum? Why do American Express travellers checks have a roman legionaire on them? If there was a culture that more closely emulates us who was it? Did the romans know something that we didnt about control of the people over expansive areas?

Actually "I lie like I am a neocon named rush" brings up something I'd like to touch on. The bible does say that it is a sin to follow two masters, but the book of romans clearly states that it is for you to obey god and then your king. This point was intensified in the King James version of the bible. Funny story behind that book is that the king of france had it commissioned after he had the leader of the knights templar brought up on bogus charges and publicly executed by burning.

Great question Max.As soon as I mull this over a bit,I will answer.
Why do people jump on any question with an anti lets kick America in the face answer? He didn't ask about the collapse of the Roman Empire he said the similarities in government and culture.Every chance you get to try to destroy this country you jump on the anti American band wagon. Why? Do you hate your country that much?
The Roman Empire was toppled from within, not from outside enemies .Is that your goal.?To criticize the politicians in power is fine ,they are fair game, but to owe no allegiance to your country of birth is just wrong.

(1) The symbol of Rome was a female wolf, often with the twins Remus and Romulus -- not an eagle as you wrongly suppose. (2) The Roman Republic was fundamentally different from ours, lacking an independent judiciary or a separate executive branch. The government of the Empire differed considerably over the years, from military dictatorship to Persian-style god-king worship -- but it never resembled the US government's institutions in any significant way. (3) The image on those travelers' checks is, I believe, actually intended to be the Greek god Hermes, patron of travel, communication, and commerce -- not a Roman soldier, whose helmet would have looked quite different in any case. (4) Roman culture was significantly different from American culture in almost every respect -- and I'll not belabor the fact you don't really know what "emulate" means. You would be well-served by actually studying some history before you start "figuring it all out" like you have here. As the Romans used to say: scientia sciolorum est mixta ignorantia. A little bit of knowledge is just diluted ignorance.

A good question, but its not just America. A lot of countries such as my own (Britain) have very imperial symbols everywhere, it tends to be either a relic from our imperial past, or in Americas case, a show of Power and Glory

Neglecting all the tripe of the first part of your question... the last part was called Pax Roma... Peace enforced by the might of Rome. You didn't do what they wanted and behave, they exterminated you. Works every time it's tried.
