A step up transformer converts a low voltage into high voltage at the grid station. thus the current can be carried a long way without considerable loss. Whereas on the other side the the step down transformer converts it into low voltage for the house hold items.

It is used to step up the voltage so that there will be less resistive loss in transmission over long distances.

p.s. transformers cannot be used with direct current.
