I have a above ground 12 x 24 pool. I want to know how often YOU shock and back wash; and the cycle you use to backwash.

Q1.) A. Generally the only time you would "shock" your pool is in the beginning of the season or after a long period when the filter has been turned off i.e. several weeks. The purpose of "shocking" your pool is to kill off the huge amounts of organisms that grow in your pool after it is no longer being filtered and chlorinated. Q 2.) A. The purpose of your filter is to trap small particles of debris and organisms that enter the pool water. The filter is filled with media which prevent particles from recirculating back into your pool. The majority of these particles are trapped in the upper layers of the filter media. "Backwashing" is the process of reversing or running backwards (hence the term "backwashing") the flow of water through the filter. This process washes the accumulation of waste particles out of the filter. This is accomplished by: 1.) Turn the filter off. 2.) Opening / closing the appropriate valves on your filter system. >>> IMPORTANT <<< Make sure the discharge is directed somewhere other than back into your pool. !!!! 3.) Turn the filter back on. 4.) Let the water run until it is reasonably clear. 5.) Turn off the pump. 6.) Reverse the positions of the valves in step 2. 7.) Turn the pump back on. (Note: The discharge will be a little cloudy however it will run clear after a few minutes). Usually there is an outlet or hose on the filter system to allow for the discharge of the waste water. Incidentally, the waste water is an excellent fertilizer for your lawn or flowers ! .................... OK now that we know the how and why, you backwash when the flow of filtered water is diminished by an appreciable amount such as about half of the flow of a newly cleaned filter.
