It's good enought to buy. If you are in a hurry, GO FOR IT.

For notebooks and laptops, I recommend Toshiba (their batteries don't EXPLODE). Buy a Toshiba from Costco, Staples or Wal-mart. These retailers accept returns if you don't like it. But Laptops should be bought, where you SEE it first. You will know what it looks like.

For desktops, I recommend DELL, but get the RESTORE DISK.

HP would probably be my second choice, after Dell. HP makes fine computers. I have an HP Desktop.

I'd almost definately rank them among the Top3 "off the shelf" manufacturers for Windows based Desktop PC's alongside DELL + Sony's VAIO range

My Grandma's had an HP Pavilion since August 2001..... still works good enough to score 101% when I recently benchmark tested it at http://www.pcpitstop.com (my slightly faster specc'ed barebones system I'm using now that I bought a year later only managed 90%).

At the moment I'm building my own.

I've heard ALIENWARE are also good (but pricey): http://www.alienware.co.uk/

Hp is one of the leading brands, they do basic machines as well as more expensive ones. If you choose the appropriate one for your use you probably will not go wrong. The phrase could be. "No one got fired for buying HP" but you are probably paying a premium for doing so.
