It seems like there were some people who were "JEALOUS", and they 'misplaced their logics'.... at least from the story I read.
IN other words the US GOVERNMNET was WRONG to crack down on Gates in that way....once again this is going by the news article which I read back in Y2K or something.
There is a notion of FREE MARKET ENTERPRISE.

I will WORK with many people to BUILD a NEW government where people can FREELY do BUSINESS, right now these people answering on this page make me wonder if they are a part of the "arm twisting MAFIA" ~ remember there is a good mafia and there is a BAD mafia, let us hope to eliminate any BAD MAFIA.

If it is deemed that the government WRONGLY took from GATES or the TOBAACCO giants, well I think it is logical to suggest that the governments should pay them back, cappish. I mean if you expect the girl who stole a bag of corn chips to pay back the clerk, or the boy who stole the suit, cappish again. GRAND THEFT AUTO examples....
STEALING IS WRONG

AS one commenter did point out or allude to : there are other options for you you do not have to buy GATE's products.... EVEN IF there was NO other similar product available, well you are not forced to buy that product... go out and make YOUR OWN.

SEPARATE BUT RELATED ISSUE
There is one situation where we as a world would hope that the CORP owner would be as fair as possible with his production and distribution ~ the notion of CURES, ie) pills/pharmaceuticals etc etc.... Now what is the deal with a guy who makes TOXIC WASTE products and sells the products and then pollutes with the waste, and that is why he is sick and needs a cure? ~ well some would say he deserves to have to PAY A HIGH PRICE.

There seems to be some CONFUSSION, if I build a company based on an ORIGINAL IDEA, how can someone "tear me down"? Well if I was advising BILL GATES I would tell him to pack up and leave the nation and take more revenues to other more "free" countries...or just mobilize in the UNDERGROUND and well WE WILL RISE, and we will CHANGE this NATION....

Because the Windows operating system is a monopoly that Microsoft exploits to the detriment of all other businesses. It would have been much better if they had been forced to put it in the public domain as part of the remedies, but the Bush administration softened the ruling.

The government seeks to break up monopolies whenever possible to create more competition in the marketplace. In the case of Microsoft, Windows operating system constitutes a monopoly because other software must work correctly with it and the source code is closely guarded by Microsoft. Unfortunately for Microsoft, they've been a little too successful to the point that other companies cannot compete with them. I don't think the US governement was wrong to try to force Microsoft to make some changes, because many of their business practices are designed to squash competition. Understandable from Microsoft's side, but the government did the right thing IMO to try to level the playing field for other companies. Monopolies tend to stiffle innovation in an industry because the monopoly doesn't really need to improve its products to maintain market share.

Microsoft does have a mission to be the best in every market they enter, to dominate that market, by producing quality products, and then marketing them more effectively than anyone else in the world. They are very, very good at this.
The Windows OS is near a monopoly, but that is not really Microsoft's doing. There are clear alternatives in the market now, with Linux and the very strong Mac OS.
The interesting thing you don't mention, the European Union has been much more demanding, and has taken a much harder stance against Microsoft than the USA.
Much of the USA Government and States in the USA's backing off, was due to getting exactly what they really wanted, MONEY. Watch your anti-monopoly or anti-Anything cases by the governments and you'll find out almost always, as soon as they get the CASH, they are happy.

It was a political issue, nothing more.
Bill Gates has done more to help the United States than any politician I can think of.
Additionally, for the people who are jabbering that Windows is a "monopoly"---- I have four computers in my house. Out of these four computers, I am running three different operating systems.
A monopoly means that every computer in the market runs Windows. This is not the case. In fact, most monopolies out there are created by the government (i.e., how many cable or electric companies can you choose from?)

You obviously don't understand what Gates did then. The buying out of other companies so there is no competition, the packaging of software products for free to put other businesses out of businesses. Check it out below

Because Microsoft created a monopoly with the added software features included in their software and monopolies like that are illegal in the USA.

Yea. Maybe they didn't like him. I heard that the Army actually came up with whole windows program and somehow bill got a hold of it and just tweaked it and made it useable for us in the domestic and business setting. (nonmilitary) So, maybe they had it in for him.
