Depends on a few things

How much stuff have you got?

Have you got any help with the loading and unloading?

Are you moving far? (Its not practical if you need to make two or three trips in the van and you are moving 200 miles away!! You'd spend more in petrol than you would on the removals company!)

Moving is stressful and tiring and if you've got loads and loads of stuff - heavy furniture, lots of boxes etc it might be too much to do yourself. The most you'd get on hire is a Transit-sized van which might not be big enough and you'd have to make loads of trips whic is tiring and expensive on the petrol. Removals vans are much bigger and have hydraulic lifts for really heavy things, plus a team of experienced blokes to do all the lifting. They can do it really quickly in one drop usually. They are also usually insured if anything gets broken.

But they are expensive.

If you don't have a lot of stuff, have plenty of help and are not going far then do it yourself. Otherwise, let the pros do it - you'll be busy enough unpacking and sorting everything out once you get into the new house.

Some friends of mine just moved (long distance) and they had them bring out a P.O.D. those little storage units. They dropped it off a couple days before they had to be moved, they could kind of take their time. When they got it packed they called PODS ( portable on demand storage). They picked it up put it in a climate controlled warehouse, until they go their new house ready to move into, dropped it of their and will pick it up when finished. It was a lot cheaper than hiring, a moving company, or renting a U-haul in the end. Their realator helped find some laborers to get them in their new house as they aren't in the best of condition for the job. Hope this helps. I checked into it myself and would be a money saver in the end.

get some friends to all come around and help, and hire a van, it would be so much cheaper, and it could turn out to be a good day, you could shout your mates a meal afterwards, takeaways at home of course, or it could end up costing you as much as a company... but if you can afford it, and have heaps of belongings, and are moving a long away from where you live , then a compant would be better, weigh up the pros and cons, good luck and have a great moving day...............

depends on your strength. depends on how much stuff you have. will you have people to help you?

some small companies are really not that expensive on an apartment move. all you have to do is pack everything and they will do the rest. this allowed me to move and clean up and get into my new place in 1 day. I was not exhausted and didn't have to bother any friends or relatives.

when moving you have the opportunity to go through your belongings and clean house. don't pack everything. this is an excellent opportunity to get rid of things you don't use, need or want. buy some large contractor trash bags and go to it.

remember to place all small breakable in your dresser drawers with your clothing as a blanket. take each drawer out filled and then place them back into the dresser during the move. it is using the dresser drawers as a box.

good luck and wear handy-man gloves.

I've done this both ways. DIY on the day nearly killed me, it took me from two months previously trying to make time here and there to midnight on the day and I had to be at work the following morning. I was nearly weeping with exhaustion.
I hired a company the next time around and they came in the day before, packed it all properly, labelled room contents and took it away, I trolled down country and stayed at a hotel ovenight, picked up the keys late morning and let them move it all in for me.
Yes it costs, but this varies and they do free estimates so shop around but stick with reputable firms with preoper lorries staff and premises.

That is most likely a bigger job than you think. You may plan to do it yourself and find that you are so tired at the end of the job that you wish you would have paid someone else. I have moved and helped friends move and next time I think I will gladly pay someone else to do it for me.

Though DIY is cheaper...you can claim off the company if anything is broken during the moving!!! It's a stressful time as it is....so pay and get someone to do it...and then you can empty the boxes as they're unloaded off the lorry......so you get straight quicker too!!

You will have to factor in the value of your possessions, your ability to pack and lift heavy items etc
Professional movers give you peace of mind and insurance and of course experience. On the other hand, doing it yourself with the help of friends, family etc is fun but hard work. All depends on how much stuff you have to move also.

Depends how much stuff you have. I moved recently and did it myself. Me and my girlfriend enjoyed finding stuff we didn't remember we had. Some good memories and made the move more pleasurable.
But if you have a lot of stuff, save your back. Pay someone.

Depends how much you have to move and how far personally I'd rather someone else have the hassle of moving my gear but it you have to take cost into the equation as well only you will know if it is worthwhile doing it yourself
