Since the stupas in Sanchi date back as far as the 3rd century, and are the most famous of Buddhist monuments, I know that some of them have been restored by excellent architects. Even though they were originally made from stone bricks, time and climate, natural weather events, etc., have taken their toll on them.
I would think, though, that because they were and are such sacred monuments, they would have been carefully guarded to prevent vandalization.

Wrap it all up in Plastic! Like in the 50's & 60"s, everything was wrapped in plastic slip covers. LOL just a joke.
Not much you can do againt the elements of Mother Nature.
Everything keeps "preserved" in the history books, and in the hearts and mind of it's people! I'm sure the wise Monks will find a solution to this problem.
