They need to be sexually mature before they start breed. Some species (escpecially dwarfs) can breed about 1.5 inches. Others need to be about 3 -4 inches (depending on adult size). And this depends on how the species grows. Some (like peacocks) are slow growers. The fish will probably be be close to a year old before they breed (that's from when they were release, not when you got them).

It depends on what species you have. Most of the Africans start at about a year. They are usually about 4-5" at that time. Some like anwerer #2 said, start much later because they grow slower.

It took only two weeks from buying them that mine started and now I wish that they didnt start i have about 50 fish in my tank im trying to get rid of once they breed they dont stop
