The current standard for a restaurant tip (to insure prompt service) has increased slightly.
In most restaurants, 15% is acceptable, however I often hear that fine dining establishments expect 20%
Also remember that is your party numbers over six, the tip should never be less than 20% and may be automatically added by the restaurant.

Standard is 15-20% of the meal total. If you are not sure of the amount, then you can use the sales tax as a guideline. 5% in my state times 4 = 20% I don't always tip 20% it depends on the service and the cost of the meal. For example, if I go to a buffet the meals are only 7.00. The tip would be just 1.40. If I never see the waitress except to seat me, she gets nothing. If she is always checking in, I will leave 3.00. That's about 43% but its still only 3 bucks. She works harder than at most places because you can keep getting more plates and more drinks and she has to keep clearing them away. Many people don't tip at buffets where I live. It's terrible.

As an ex-waitress I wish wages were good enough that people didn't have to tip but that will probably never change. So I start with 15% and adjust accordingly for number of people, trips to the table and over-all service etc.We watched a server go to a table for two 17 times one night, any bets on if they left a good tip?

It depends on how much the dinner is. For two people in the average place is let's say $30.00. If you want to do a 15% tip, you multiply 30 by .15, and get 4.50, so leave between 4 and 5 $$ for the tip.

Personally, I figure 15% and round up a little... but if the service is great, then I tip more.
