Take the second example. You have two fractions with different denominators (the number on the bottom). First you want to find a common denominator for them. The smallest number that is divisible by 3 and 5 is 15. You can always multiply a fraction by the number one in some form... so for the first fraction use 3/3 and for the second use 5/5 (remember 3/3 =1, and 5/5 =1). This will convert them to the following:

3/5 x 3/3 - 1/3 x 5/5 = 9/15 - 5/15 = (9 - 5)/15 = 4/15

Well, if that first one is a typo then it's just common denominators and subtraction:
2/3 - 4/9 = 6/9 - 4/9 = 2/9
9/15 - 5/15 = 4/15
6/15 - 5/15 = 1/15
