First up, its a ford. All fords are crap.(ford is an acronym for Fixed Or Repaired Daily)
Fords and duct tape are allways seen, mostly because of the material the bumpers be made of, They shatter off leaving sharp edges (which would fail an MOT) and duct tape is applied to 'protect' the general public. A nice cheap alternative to replacing the bumper. (just like ford being a nice cheap alternative to buying a car)
In short its both a combination of materials used, and the driver(If they could drive their motor they wouldn't of hit nowt in the first place)

The bumper covers on Mondeos are quite flimsy - especially the facelifted ones from 1997 to 2000 (if you're behind one on a motorway watch the lower edge flutter in the wind).
The actual bumper is a structure hidden behind this flimsy cover, so damage to the cover will not have much effect on the bumper's ability to perform in a low-speed impact.
The Mondeo sold very well in the UK for many years, which means there are a lot of older Mondeos on the road. The number of older Mondeos on the roads is also proof that they are generally quite robust.
However the numbers means that availability is not a problem, leading to low values. Therefore minor cosmetic damage (e.g. a cracked bumper cover) is not worth repairing properly - a new bumper cover would probably cost more than the car is worth. Hence the use of tape to effect a repair adequate to get the car through an MOT without wasting money on a low-value car.

They are not meant to last they look good for the first 5 years or so.The bumpers are wafer thin, the slightist knock and they get a hole in them.I've replaced several bumpers on mondeos as a car dealer.I wouldn't want to be in a mondeo in the event of an accident. Also the trim inside isn't that great. My advice if you want to buy a mondeo buy one no older than 3 years old and sell it when it gets to 5 years old.

there is some absolute rubbish being spouted on here, mondeo is a damn good car im currently running a latest model with 105000 and showing no signs of falling to bits with no duct tape in sight.
they have been around for 14 years now so some will be starting to show signs of wear as anything of that age.
they are that rubbish the police, paramedics and countless thousands of cabbies use them.

Mondeos are not meant to last. They are good looking cars which look expensive for the first couple of years & them they start to fall apart.
Good boy toy only.

What a ridiculous generalisation!
Ours is an S reg, I bought it off a friend last year,as she needed to sell it and we were looking for a much newer car but for the price we thought we'd drive it into the ground while we saved for something ever better.
It's a lovely car, it looks like new ,with leather heated seats, air con and almost every extra you could want. A five hour drive to Scotland with the cruise control on was like a relaxing sit of the sofa at home.
