Usually a "marine" paint. You can ask about it at a paint store or a boat shop.

Wow I tried to read some of the answers. Well first of all, are you the one who is painting this boat? Cause If you are the one who is painting the boat do you have the proper equipment needed to do the job. I personally use a gravity feed gun, but I paint cars, not boats. But being in the paint business, I do know a thing or to about paint. The next question I have to ask is what kind of material is the boat made out of? There are many, and I do mean many kinds of paint in to days world. If your painting a boat that is made out of wood is that wood treated? You'll want to treat the wood with a sealant, that way the water wont rot the wood. Next you want a paint that will last. I recommend a poly-urethane based paint. It hold up pretty well. Now then Dont go to your local hardwear store to buy the paint, I recommend going to an Automotive store, AKA Napa, Oreilly's, ect. They have experts that can help you.

Bonifay03, we need more information - is the boat trailered or kept in the water? Are you painting above the water line, below the water line, or both? Are you doing it yourself or having someone else do it? Do you have equipment to spray or are you planning to brush it?
Gelcoat is not a paint - remove that answer and disregard Level 7 Doug - there's so much work involved in regelcoating a boat it's not funny.

you know the two best days in the life of a boat owner? The day you get it and the day you sell it. Just like the painter said materals the boat is made out of are critical. You can even use emamel oil base paint and roll it on on some surfaces. Good luck

All depends what you boat is made of, Wood, Aluminum ,or Fiberglass . Also depends on where the boat will be painted above or below the water line.

Gel Coat is the best top coat for a boat but, either epoxy or even automotive paint can be used for a complete repaint.

Are you in salt or fresh water? Do you want to paint the hull, topsides or deck? What is the boat made of? Do you leave it in the water?
