Ford KA 1.3i, the front wiper arms seem to have power as they work if I push the arms to a vertical position, the arms will then automatically return to their horizontal position. When the wipers are turned on, the motor can be heard trying to lift the wiper arms.

"Knackered" Must be English... I agree you can remove the cover that covers the worm gear on the motor check condition of the plastic gear probably has one spot with out teeth Replace motor assembly. Both the wiper arms loose and linkage can be the problem also so tighten the arm nuts under the plastic covers at the fulcrum / wiper shafts. That Ford is called Espire in USA

Most likely cause of the problem is the nut that holds the wiper arm to the wiper spindle pry back the cover and tighten the nut!

By pushing them you may have gotten them out of alignment. Be sure they are in the right position to begin with. If they are too low and are catching on the bottom of the windshield then they won't go up on their own.
