I had the 400XS, and it had no changeable fuel filter. Because of that, garbage in the fuel tank got into the carburators.
Take off the carbs and dissassemble them, clean them very good. After you reinstall them, install an inline fuel filter. Also clean the inside of the fuel line from the tank to the valve, and from the valve to the carb's.
Once that is done, you should be able to get it started and keep it running.
Note that actually, there is a metal filter inside the tank, but if like mine, it probably rusted and is no longer filtering.

in case you do no longer think of gas is getting to the cylinders than you have different problems. to examine that subject, do away with the spark plugs (do no longer connect them to the spark plug caps). With the carbs full of gas, attempt to crank the engine with the electrical powered start up. gas could spray out of the spark plug holes. If it would not, could desire to be low cyl compression or tight / leaking valves. examine cyl compression. 100psi for it to a minimum of start up. a hundred twenty five-a hundred and fifty is primary. regulate the valve clearance in the event that they are tight. it extremely is rather no longer likely that the main jets are clogged. The openings are very great. The pilot jets could be clogged. The openings are pin holes. do away with the carbs and sparkling them. do away with the pilot jets (long and skinny) and carry them as much as the sunshine. you will be waiting to work out by using them.
