this happened about 6 mths ago, but i ignored it due to my infrequent use.Now that I am using the D drive again, i realized it can only play DVDs
my laptop is : toshiba Satellite A80

my D drive is displayed in My Computers as: DVD-RAM (D:)
it uses MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-831S

the problem is that it doesnt detect the presence of CDs/ CDRs/VCDs when it is suposed to for all dics formats. I remembered using the D drive to read CD-Rs before and it was working then. I wonder if its due to wrong configuration settings?

I have tried troubleshooting the D drive, updating( there's no better updates available online ), but doesnt help.

i have tried scaning for hardware changes in Device Manager too. No use.
i have ticked 'Enabled Digital CD audio for this CD ROM device', but still its not able and states ' please enter a blank disc' when in fact the disc's inside.
even in my Windows Media Player i realized it indicates that no disc is detected in D drive.

my laptop is 1 yr+

your CD ram may be dirty...insert a lens cleaning disc and clean it or open the CD player and clean the lens with clean cotton bud.

Right click on my computer the click properties - click hardware then device manager - click on the plus nexr to cd/dvd rom drives

right click on the offending drive then click uninstall

click ok and the warning

now click on the plus next to the ide ata/atapit controllers

ignore the peimary and secondary channels

right click on the one that says controller - then uninstall - click ok on the warning then click yes to restart

when pc restarts it will say found new hardware and after a while the pc will ask you to restart again - restart

test your drive does this work

Also in the device manager double click on the primary id channel - then click on the advance settings - make sure both devices have for thier transfer mode DMA is available

The best way to see if it is a software or hardware problem is to create a bootable cd and then restart your computer - if it does not recognise it outside of windows then it will definatley be a hardware probelm
Try this link for a generic bootup disk - see below - or see if your recovery program will startup with your recovery disk

if this works then it will be a software related problem - try a third party cd reading program - goto www.download.com and get some from this site

Hope this helps

remove the battery on the laptop **, then remove the button battery (should be a small access panel on the bottom for this), connect the laptop to the power cord, turn it on, while it boots up unplug the laptop cord from the wall, wait 10 seconds, and repeat the process one time. when it is back off again, replace the button battery and the regular battery, and reboot as normal. this resets the cmos bios chip and should cause the motherboard to reload all parameters for the dvdram drive.

** also, if the laptop will not power on you might need the normal battery in but make sure the button battery is still removed to properly flash the bios chip/s.

I would suggest running a CD/DVD lens cleaning disk. If that doesn't help, and you feel comfortable in doing so, remove the CD/DVD drive from your PC. (It may be harder than you think to remove the drive from a laptop. If you're not comfortable in doing so, don't try.) Take it apart, and clean the lens with cleaning liquid and a cotton bud. Don't use any old liquid though, you don't want to damage it irreparably.

Sounds to me the drivers for the D:\drive have been corrupted...you'll need to reinstall them...Or, your drive has just gone bad...That happened to me, but luckly it was still under warranty & I was able to get it replaced for free....

...it could be as simple as a dirty laser reader. The DVD & cdr could be using different parts of the reader
