Is this a philosophical question or one of safety? There isn't any reason why you can't leave your computer on for several days or even weeks if necessary turn the monitor off when you are not around. Unlike Rhino I wouldn't leave a TV on unattended, there are many electrical fires caused by televisions being left on not to mention the environmental aspect.

This is an age old question like the chicken or the egg. Starting up a computer each time is additional wear on the hard drive and power supply. Leaving it on may subject you to additional virus invasions.

Years ago, monitors would burn-in an image but now that usually doesn't happen. Turning the monitor off will save some electric power but most computers have a hibernate mode which will do almost the same.

It's a 50/50 call. I leave mine on all the time. I have a good firewall and anti-virus protection.

It really depends on what you are using the computer for. As others have answered, leaving it on does not hurt and can be better for your computer that turning it on / off. If you only use your computer to check email or go online for an hour or so a day, it would be best to shut it off when done, then to leave it on and open to viruses or power surges, outages.

If you run a lot of programs, loading and unloading them over hours of time, it would also be best to at least restart the computer occasionally to get a fresh start.

It will use more energy if you leave it switched on all day, which will increase your electricity bill (and isn't good for the environment). But it isn't good for the computer to keep turning it on and off al the time, and I think the computer uses most electricity when it starts up.

You can cut down the electricity you use by switching the monitor off if you're away from the computer for a while, and switching off things like the printer and scanner when you're not using them.

Turn it on in the morning if you like, but then turn it off before you got ot bed at night. In that way, the computer gets to reboot when you turn it on again next morning. This is good for it. It is no problem to leave it on all day. Better this way than turning it off and on each time you want to use it.Turn off your modem once a week.

rhino_man420 is correct. You have less trouble over time leaving it on. If you have an LCD display it just need a screen saver or set it to turn off under power setting in control panel. With a regular display like a TV screen use a screen saver or just turn the Brightness down until it dark. They do recommend if you connected to DSL, Cable etc. disconnecting your line so you less prone to Hacking when you not around.

The beauty of most modern electronics is not only that they are better left on...but that the screens can autoshutoff after a 'period of time'.

I have 5 computers (3 in my office) and all of them stay on & online 24x7.

Monitors do have a shelflife so its a good idea to turn them off or setup a timed 'after time' shutoff.

most electrical equipment lasts longer and is 'happier' when left on rather than being switched on and off all the time - however, the environmentalists out there will not be happy with this!!!! You can switch off the monitor (as mentioned in another answer) and leave the processor on.

the best thing for a pc is for it to reboot at some stage and at short intervals like every night. this is so that the temporary memory can be cleared and thus allows your pc to perform better and smoother. therefore always restart the pc but do not login that way its on but its not active as no one has logged in.
