What are you talking about? You obviously don't watch Spongebob. I knew it...

There's other good cartoons, too, like The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, Fairly Odd Parents...

You're right, they did used to be very good - heck, I still love all the cartoons I grew up on. Darkwing Duck, Digimon, Batman...they still entertain me today. But that isn't to say there aren't any good cartoons at present; Invader Zim (canned, I know) is fantastic, and personally I'm rather partial to The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy.

I suspect the primary reasons are a lack of good script writers, and perhaps people are afraid or don't have the opportunity to break new ground...for example, cartoon corporations may be strict on what is allowed or isn't. Coupled with a dearth of creativity and a lack of knowledge of what's "funny", and you get a sore absence of new, good material. Take "The Simpsons", for example - it's still funny, but it used to be funnier, and I think the reason for that is because they stopped developing the characters - in fact, Homer and Bart and Lisa and everyone else have turned into caricatures or representations of pop culture over time, and this, well, basically squeezed all the heart out of the entire series. There just isn't anything you can really connect to anymore.

american cartoons have gone the way of the idiot. what sells is a good 'happy' ending with no main characters dying. in anime they cover everything. blood pain sorrow happiness. they have everything. american cartoons need to take a hint and develop the characters. if not then they will lose more audience as we stop watching. ah well. im gonna go watch some unedited naruto and samurai champloo. enjoy the animation of crap that we call cartoons....

Lack of imagination.
The fact that it's all been done before.
Companies more concerned with $$$'s not quality.
It seems that the only effort nowadays is put in to a Hollywood animated movie.
Saying that even some of the Disney stuff seems to have lost direction.
With web-sites like 'SENDSPACE' it's up to the public to make their own movies and show them. (Not porn).
That's the future.

The Simpsons have run out of ideas and jokes (after 17 seasons, who can blame them?) but there are still some good cartoons out there. Futurama is great (though they've stopped making it) and Family Guy is my favourite programme ever

Well, that's what's funny. To you, cartoons when you were young were awesome, but to your kids they would have sucked. Same thing now, I have kids, I would bet money that our cartoons were better, but you ask the kids and I guarantee that they would not agree with that. I have to drag them away from those sucky cartoons of today.

Yeah...I stick to watching old gems like TopCat, Flinstones and of course Tom and Jerry...

But the Simpsons are an exception: they can make me laugh ANYDAY...oh and South Park can be really funny (that episode where they show Micheal Jackson as Mr Jefferson....PRICELESS COMEDY!!!)
