Aside from being reasonably priced and eco-friendly, it should be a compact car. Yes, that reminds me...are SMART cars available in the states? I'm from CA.

If you want more traditional technology, get a VW diesel, with fuel mileage around 45 mpg. VWs are sporty and comfortable, and the diesel engines run forever.

If you want something with all the modern hybrid technology, get the Honda Insight. Very high gas mileage but cartoonish looks.

As far as I know the SMART cars are going to be introduced in the US for the 2007 model year. (We've had them here in Canada for a couple years already, but only with the diesel engines because the gas version won't meet our emissions standards.)

Aside from that if your looking for a stylish yet practical car just visit your local Honda dealer. Honda has really done it right with all their cars. They have powerful engines yet are really good on gas. They of course also have the Insight Hybrid which is odd-looking but great on gas with ratings of over 60 MPG. If you want a Hybrid that looks more "normal" consider a Civic Hybrid.
The downside: You may have to order one and wait for awhile. They are very popular with gas over $3 a gallon.

Enjoy your new ride, whatever it might be.

Good luck
Mike

Buying and old diesel car if you can find a good one for cheap and invest 500$ to switch it to bio-diesel (recycled oils). There are many sites giving information to help you do it. Interesting sites on new electric cars are www.zenn.com and www.twike.com
