I had a Raccoon once. They are fun to interact with. They are curious and can get into most anything, and, get out of anything. If, they in a cage, they will watch how you open the door and try. You need a lock, they can not pick. Many animals can have rabies, it just like any other disease. But, they have to catch it from an infected animal. You would know if the animal has rabies in time to seek medical attention. Rabies does still exist, but, the cases seem to be more rare now than 20-30 years ago. With people giving their animals shots.

They are fine. They are kind of fun pets to have around when they are young. But remember they are animals. There was a pet raccoon that ate the skin off of a baby's face. That's not cool. That kids face is now permantly screwed up.

Yes, they are my favorite animal. When I was young, my family raised two raccoons on our farm since my grandfather found them in the hay that he had moved from his other farm. They didn't even have their eyes open, and we had to bottle feed them. They were so much fun and extremely smart. Luckily, they grew up and lived in our barn so we got to see them for quite a few years. One even brought her babies back to the farm for a visit. It was a great experience!

They get into the garbage cans, knock stuff over, and steal fish out of ponds. I like them just fine when they're in wild areas. Not so much in the middle of the city!

I like racoons, but have learned never to leave any kind of food or garbage around at night. They are night raiders, and you don't want to see what they can do to a plastic garbage pail or the garbage in it on one of their midnight raids

Yes, think they are cute. We dont have raccoons in South Africa, but there are Meerkats which look similar.
