Unfortunately Elvis has that title. But John Lennon once said if Rock N Roll had another name it would be Chuck Berry.

Of course it depends on what you mean by " king ". If you're talking most hits or something like that, it's really no contest.

Chuck Berry had 27 hits and only one #1.
Elvis had 151 hits and 19 # 1s.

Berry wrote and recorded many good songs; Elvis didn't write music but during the early years of rock, Elvis WAS rock-and-roll.

Neither one was much of a role model. Though actually, Elvis was pretty close in the early years, before so much fame made him pretty much a recluse. Chuck spent some time in prison for transporting an underage girl across state lines for immoral purposes. It was pretty much a frameup by people who didn't like rock-and-roll.

Both of them are still very well-known half a century after their earliest recordings; think of that, 50 years and still selling records!

Elvis is dead but Berry is still out there making appearances. I've seen Berry several times and the early concerts were really good. The last time I saw him was about 10 years ago and I really thought he should quit while he was ahead.

Some people say that Elvis was greatly influenced by Chuck Berry. It's simply not true. If you listen to some of the early songs by Barry and some of the early songs by Elvis there is no similarity. I suspect that some of the people who think Elvis was influenced by Berry have not listened much to either artist

It all started in 1956 and I was there. I was 14 and rock-and-roll was the savior that separated me and many other teams from our parents music. But " Hound Dog " sounds nothing like " "Maybelline ". " Love Me Tender " sounds nothing like " Johnny B. Good ". In fact, Chuck Berry never recorded a slow song so he certainly wasn't much of an influence on the great ballads Elvis recorded.

I listen to each of them a lot and think they're both great but there's only one king and that's Elvis.

It's a rather difficult thing, to compare legends to each other. You can hardly fault either of them for doing what they did. However, in terms of world wide impact, Elvis wins out. Chuck Berry had a huge cultural influence, and, as others have said, Elvis may have emulated him, but his impact was primarily in the U.S.A. That's not to lessen what he did, though. But Elvis brought Rock & Roll to the world. Ask almost anyone in the world who Elvis is, and they'll tell you. A lesser proportion would be able to tell you who Chuck Berry is.

So, in terms of global impact, Elvis wins out.

As far as singing goes Elvis. But music wise the crown would go to Chuck Berry. Back then there wasn't anyone who's music sounded remotley like Chuck's music did when he played his guitar.
