The first recorded record of the potato is in 1537 from the Spanish Conquistador Castellanos. In 1586 after battling with the Spaniards in the Caribbean, Frances Drake stopped off at Cartagena in Columbia to collect provisions - Tobacco & Potato Tubers. Before returning to Britian he went to Roanoke Island, where the first English & Scottish settlers had attempted to set up a colony. The pioneers returned to England with Drake along with the potatoes. Agriculturalists in europe found potatoes easier to grow than the other staple crops, such as Wheat & Oats; Potatoes produced more food energy than any other Europian crop for the same area of land, and all that was required was a shovel for harvesting.

Originally found in the Andes Mountains by Spanish conquistadors in the late 1500's, the potato was first brought to Europe, then to India and on to China. Still, a wilder form of the potato was the staple diet of Peru as early as 8,000 years ago.

Some decades after Columbus reached America, some conquistador brought them to Europe! I know that after Greece was freed by the Ottomans rule, the first governor of Greece, Kapodistrias, brought the potatoes to Greece, in 1830s!

The potato originated in South America, and was brought back to Spain in 1533 by the Conquistador, Pizarro. It was cultivated in Spain, and from there spread to the rest of Europe. Here's a website that will tell you more.

Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada, Spanish conquistador, brought the first potatoes to Spain from Peru in 1565 after his failure to find gold. They first appeared in the markets of Sevilla in 1573 when they were initially used as animal food.

They came from Peru and, since the British didn't colonize South America, they had to travel back to Europe by the Spanish. Seems I heard that Columbus took some back after his 4th and last voyage to the new world during which he had visited Central and South America
