Could be a lot of things, but let's rule out the little things first:
1. Check cable connections on the battery - Good and tight? Clean?
If not, get a small wire brush and clean up both posts on the battery. Replace the cables securly.
2. Do any of the accessories in the car work when jumper cables are connected? Headlights? Dome light? Radio?
If they do the problem is likely the starter or the starter solenoid.
Troubleshoot by putting a known-good battery in the car, try to start it. If it starts (or even cranks over) you've found your problem.
3. If you do get the car started, check battery voltage at the battery with the engine idling. It should be about 14 volts. If it's not You're looking at a new voltage regulator.
4. If you get the car started, disconnect the negative (-) battery cable for just a few seconds. If the engine stalls, it's the alternator.
There are lot's of other possibilities, if none of these help you make another post and be more specific about what you have and haven't done.
Good luck
Mike

It could be the battery.
Take it to an auto parts store to have tested.
You didn't mention what year your car is, but some older models had what is called a fusible link on the positive battery cable. IT would be a thicker part of the wire about a 10" down from the battery terminal.
Other possibilities are loose positive lead or negative lead or corroded connections, at the battery or at the other ends.

It may be as simple as a bad connection to the battery. What you need to do (if you want to fix yourself) is a process of elimination. Start with cleaning the connections, look at alt belt. test battery. If all that doesn't work, pull altornator and have it checked. Next I would suspect a possible starter problem. Bet you'll find the problem within these steps.

you didn'tspecify what year but i suspect either a main fuse in the under hood fuse box or a fuse wire coupling at the startermotor battery terminal if older model.
