Ludwig Van Beethoven

Not only did he lose his hearing but his music was considered highly controversial at the time. His work is considered to have effectively initiated the romantic era in music. 1801 was the year in which his hearing began to degenerate - but this did not affect his abilty to compose beautiful, moving music.

Ludwig Van Beethoven.
A composer of the classical era, also the one which ended that era and started romantism, in a way.
Only in the last years of his life was he not able to hear, he lost his hearing progressively.
Even so, he composed his 9th and 10th symphony almost deaf! The 9th is considered a real masterwork.
The 10th symphony was unknown to exist until recent discoveries because the composer had sent parts of it to his friends, all around the world - he said that he wanted to die as the composer of the 9th!

Bethoven went deaf later in life but continued to compose. The key was having once been able to hear he could internalize the music he was writing and effectively hear it.

Either that or the concept that classical music is good is all hogwash (no way can a deaf guy write music).
Long live ROCK!

Ludwig van Beethoven gradually lost his hearing over the last part of his life. By the time he was in his 50's he was totally deaf.

As one writer noted, "Deafness doesn't prevent composers from hearing the music. It prevents the distractions."

Beethoven. He wasn't born deaf but became deaf in later life. The story goes that he would right and conduct music while the orchestra in front of him struggled to keep up and match what he was hearing in his head.
