The word dates back to the 15th century and refers to a portable lock. Lock comes from the middle english 'lokke', but no one knows what the 'pad' part meant.

"Pad" actually refers to an item which is small. "Lock" refers to a locking usage. So, the word "Padlock" mean something to lock something.
