Michael Jackson is the king of pop. I personally don't find him appealing because of obvious reasons, but everyone the whole world over knows who he is. No other singer is that popular.

When you say singer, I assume you mean someone who can actually sing... so that rules out Britney, Jessica, and Paris... so I'm going to go the total mature route and say Celine Dion.

Madonna - look at her output of singles and albums. Staggering, and they still sell really well. She hasn't tailed off at all, and reinvents herself to stay en vogue.
