I've been able to sms text message to places as far as India, but never succeeded in texting my friends in the US. What - if anything - is the solution?

There are a lot of reasons for SMS not reaching someone. Here are some tips to lessen the possiblity of unsuccessful messages.

Here are some of my suggestions.
1. Use the complete ISDN number for sending messages
+ (countrycode) (network destination code) (mobile number)
eg. +1 626 1111111
2. Use your home SMS center (this depends on your operator)
3. Change message validity period to maximum

Your sms message is stored in an SMS center before being sent to the destination mobile station. If for some reason that person is unreachable (phone turned off, or not in the coverage area), your SMS will keep the message for a given length of time while trying at pre defined periods by your operator to resend the message. Should the SMS not be successful for the time period you set, it will delete the message even if the destination mobile station has not received it.

Yes, you can. What you'll need to bear in mind is that you have the right code to do this to the USA.

This is +1 (or 001) followed by the number of the person you are trying to text to - eg. +12125550001.

Bear also in mind that if you're on a contract phone that you need to make sure that you have any international bars removed from your account, sometimes this can be a pain in the backside if you have them. If you're on T-Mobile, sending SMS is 20p/txt - the same cost as it would be to send an MMS also - and on this the receiving person in the States shouldn't have to pay anything to pick up the message, you should check this out first though. You don't have to pay anything to receive texts on the UK networks, though.

I text to the USA from Australia and it works fine.
... type in your intentional code for dialing out .. add "1" for the USA then add the mobile phone number of the person you want to text.
You can do this also from Yahoo Messenger possibly easier.
Hope this is a help to you.

Have fun and Text all you want.

Thias should not be a problem unless you have the number wrong. However as well as the cost to you your freinds in the USA are charged a recieving cost. This means they might chose to reject the message, especially if they dont know it's from you. Wherever possible you are better off using e-mail.

Getting their number right. Ask your friends what their operators say. Normally you would have to dial an international access code and country code before the number. Some have special codes for mobiles.
