I was looking more for why these countries seem late in electing a woman President and less interested in which woman you would vote for in the next elections.
For instance these could be:
> Macho culture
> Patriachal society
> Religious beliefs/traditions
> Pro Military industry lobby groups
> Sons as opposed to daughters are encouraged to take top management positions.
> Fear of powerful women.
> "Old boys network"

The fact the American who answered are considering it seriously is obviously a sign that US maybe getting ready.

Your list is not exactly correct. For example, either you have to move France to "no woman" list or move Russia from that list. Both countries had ruling Queens, but no women - heads of state in modern times (Édith Cresson was a prime minister, who is not a head of state in France, same thing, by the way, for Bulgaria). And for monarchies (Netherlands, Spain and Japan) - do you mean a monarch or a prime-minister? If you mean the monarch, then maybe constitution precludes a women to become the ruler of the country (I remember reading about the problem in Japan regarding this).
I am also surprised to see China in this list.

I think that women's emancipation and active participation in politics is a relatively recent phenomenon (except for ruling Queens). Therefore, it's a question of time and traditions and whether the political establishment is ready (I am pretty sure that voters are ready).
Also, I don't think having a female head of state will necessary reflect the status of women .

Two corrections: Italy did have a female prime minister in the 60's. She was a former porn star...very odd. Didn't accomplish much except the legalization of contraceptives.

Also, a country to add to your list is Indonesia which has had a femail head of state.

The rest of the countries, including the US will eventually have one. Who knows...the US may be next. The last one on your list will probably be Japan where women traditionally hold a very inferior position in society.

I would vote for Condi Rice in a heartbeat because I agree with her viewpoint. And the same reasoning is why I will not vote for Hillary Clinton. Hillary is only interested in power and will do or say anything that will further her power, even if she contradicts herself in the process. Condi on the other hand is consistent in her viewpoint and you know her underlying philosophy.

Hillary Clinton will become president in two years. But! Is she a woman? Bill has told his girlfriends that Hillary is not a woman.
She is stronger than the other Democrats. She supports Bush in Iraq.
Hillary is "standing by her man". And that man is Bush. Cool!

excluding Hillary Clinton, with women we would have less war. Women are less apt to send their babies off to be killed
