Kalypsee and David have given you some great information. Here's some information that you won't read in the history books.
Ho Chi Minh's life before he became a leader of the Vietnamese people was intentionally covered up. He went by several names when he was younger for many reasons including the fact that he was a renown troublemaker. He is depicted in communist Vietnam history as a wise and knowledgeable person, but was at best an average student in school. He was ashamed of his family being very poor, and positioned himself to be adopted into families that were rich and very influential. Vietnamese adopt people into their families more easily than many other cultures and usually done informally without legal involvement.
History books indicate Ho Chi Minh's struggle in traveling to Europe. He was actually sent to France by one of his adopted rich families. His struggle was his own choice. This is where he learned about communism and help form the French Communist movement.
Ho Chi Minh copied a lot of what Stalin did in the Soviet Union. Ho gained much of his support by killing thousands of his opponents and many of those who could oppose him. Ho killed people who could reveal his checkered past too. The difference between Ho Chi Minh and Stalin is many of those that Ho wanted to kill escaped to South Vietnam and then to America.
There are Vietnamese Americans who know Ho Chi Minh better than the native Vietnamese do. They would piss on his grave if given the opportunity, which is probably why there are always two companys of armed soldiers guarding Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum.

One of the more interesting and less know facts that i know.....in 1945 he was deathly ill and very close to death, spring i beleive possibly march. In an effort to save him, OSS agents went on a daring mission involving parachuting behind enemy lines and bringing him medicine that saved his life. How ironic.
