If you have an amount of water in a glass, and you lower the temperature enough for it to become ice; how will the volume change (will the ice volume be bigger or smaller then the initial one)

it increases
it's the special nature of water
this is why ice floats on water(de4nsity decreases as volume increases)
when water is subjected to tempreture less than 4 degree celcius it starts to get larger

When water freezes it forms chains of molecules (and crystals) that are not as compact as liquid water and therefore ice swells. The volume will increase about 10% which represents that part of an iceberg sticking up out of water. Of course ice could even crack the glass (or burst plumbing) which is a good reason liquids (mostly water) are packed in plastic or aluminum.

hey actually the volume decreases till the ice reaches 4 degrees celcius frm 0 degrees. this is an anomalous property of water(water expands when cooled and contracts when heated in this range). after 4 deg volume increases. but note that mass always remains the same

The volume of water expands when it is ice.

nicely at the start it replaced into water. it replaced into in a freezer for some so it wouldnt turn to ice that quickly. and the ice which you probably did see is the ice beginning as much as harden. it has to harden someplace. so yeah in case you like ice keep it in there in basic terms a sprint longer. desire i helped :P Christina

volume increases, same mass. That's why ice floats
