When looking for information on the web all the search engines I use seem to be pre-disposed to assume that I want to buy something! are there any that are less commercially biaised?

They always do, but it's not the problem with the search engine, it's that the site owners have set their system to come up every time someone puts in an search request. Put in the name of your local village, and you will get up a result asking if you want to buy the village, just go to E bay!!

Sounds to me like to have spyware on your pc, try running a good spyware program. Microsofts defender, which is free is pretty good.
