I am shopping for a notebook and am looking at basic entry level ones to supplement my desktop which will be used as the primary computer. Most of the entry notebooks are running around 2GHZ processors. My main use for the notebook is basic office applications and internet (including video streaming). I won't be using the notebook for gaming or video editing etc. The entry level notebooks generally come with 500 RAM. Is that enough or should I upgrade and if so how much would you rec? TIA

In questions like this, it is best to look @ the longterm as far as RAM goes...besides the video card, RAM is the thing that is going to keep your computer viable in the coming years.....RAM prices right now are dirt cheap so I would suggest stuff as much RAM in it as it can hold.....this way you won't have to worry about fluctuating prices in that market...got 3GB RAM in this machine when I bought it @ Xmas and know that it'll be more than enough for @ least the next 5 years.....only thing I'm looking @ is upgrading the video module but that can wait until it is really needed

If you going to stick around with XP (or not upgrade to Vista) then you should be happy working around 256 MB

Moving up with XP 512 is a good safe ammount

And if you want to have 1GB your ready in RAM specs for Vista when its released - if its released :P

you must take at least 512 MB of RAM as todays computing needs it becoz of large programs, even u use common applications, and i think 64 to 128 MB of it will be shared for the display adaptor,

but i suggest u to buy maximum RAM Upto the limit of ur MotherBoard (i think ur motherboard should support 2GB of RAM)
as in future, if u want to increase yr RAM than firstly yr old RAM will not come in use and may be there will no availability of that type of ram in the near future, as hardwares are changing dramitically
