My view is that too many people pick "sides" and go with the party view on most topics rather than thinking independently.
I think one of the main problems is the media. All you see on TV are diametrically opposed views. The Ultra Conservatives and the Ultra Liberals. The freaks from both parties.
Personally, I think most Americans tend to be in the middle of the road on most views (either liberal conservative or conservative liberal). But those aren't the views you will see on TV or in the newspaper... they don't "grab your attention". It is the whack jobs that you will see, spouting their twisted views for anyone who will stop to listen.
And unfortunately, here in America, most people don't take the time to actually research the issues and form their own opinions. We tend to watch a debate or two, or a few shows like "Crossfire" and form an opinion within minutes based solely upon the rant and ravings of these televised lunatics.
I say scrap the electoral college, and get rid of the two party system. We cannot be a full democracy until we have more choices and the people's voice is heard directly. The electoral college was great back when we had to transport the voting results by horse. I think technology has come a long way since then. I've been nothing but thoroughly disappointed in my "two choices" every Presidential election since I've been old enough to vote.
Yeah, we have "other" parties, but because of the blind party-based voting of the common American lemming, nobody who isn't a Republican or Democrat has a chance.

republicans are suposed to be for smaller Gov't (down with taxes!) yet continually want to interfere with other peoples moral choices (anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, etc...)
They think Gov't should be run like a business, for efficiency, but business charges more for their services. Our society shares many things like roadways, schools, and military obligations. Our country is only, like a chain, as strong as its weakest links. If we don't help the poorest and weakest citizens, we no longer are a cohesive unit.
The democrats, on the other hand are wandering the political plains right now, trying to figure out where they stand and why. They also have left the misbegotten behind. The rise of the republicans scared the **** out of them, not realizing that the majority of registered voters out there make less than median wages and have just given up voting. The people feel undervalued, that their vote doesn't count. Whoever can convince them otherwise could become the next president.

you need to complete your question, since it has to be lelated to something.
anyway, i believe that the people should be given the right to decide how, where and if they want to live together with others as a nation or not.
politically, i support no party nor believe in them as a means of emancipating the people from their difficulties and problems. when politicians gather in a central place far from the people they are meant to represent, and make laws and statutes for and on behalf of the people, you can never be sure or assured of justice.

I'm a moderate Independent with conservative leanings.
Pro-moderate gun control (not "get rid of all guns" gun control, but the kind that entails that those with a violent criminal history can't have one, and that there's a waiting period on them).
Pro-Same Sex civil unions...for the sake of appeasing everyone possible, just don't call it marriage.
Anti-abortion for myself, but believe it should be kept legal.
Anti-School prayer. I wouldn't want an atheist leading my children (should I ever have them) in a Christian prayer. I also wouldn't want them teaching my kids about the Bible.
Neutral on the war in Iraq. No one has all the facts, except those who have been there, or are there now.
Pro flat tax. It would tax the rich more, and the middle class less, based on income.
Yet somehow some people on here insist I'm ultra-conservative. I don't see it.
Those same people who are insisting that I'm ultra-conservative are going through all of my answers and giving me thumbs-down. Great people. Really.
