Why are Indian women so obsessed with fair skin than the women of any other country? I know that most women in Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and even Mexico also like pale skin, but they are not so obsessed with it as the Indians. The youg ones who are dusky-skinned get depressed and feel inferior as a result of this, and suffer badly when it comes to finding suitable marriage partners for themselves.

I'm not sure what the societal pressures are in India, but I can tell you in Malaysia, there are tonnes of 'whitening' products from Avon, Olay, St. Ives etc etc etc. And people now think that the whiter the better. Media and advertisers (beauty companies) are feeding it. This of course, goes along with the facial surgeries for double eyelids, breast augmentation and so on.
I think people don't realize that you need not to change your colour to be beautiful. If we demand better treatment, we'll get it. But if we submit to unreasonable demands then well, like you said...depression and suffering, and feelings of inferiority. You teach people how to treat you and if you are happy being whatever colour you are, people will have to eventually accept it, or you may reject them.

It's very uncomfortable to say, but maybe it's because the Indian society have been very sensitive about their status. In the past or maybe still, many see each other through their status. The blacker the skin, the more lowly they are. The whiter ones were the ones at the top. So, that gets them the impression that whiter means greater.

That's because since centuries ago India has been socially divided into North and South, with one fairer and the other darker. I can't really remember which is which, but naturally the fairer ones have always been the better looking and sought after, influential and rich.

don't know exactly. Maybe it's because the social status. Pale skin refers to western people.
Western people = high social status = rich = pale skin
Dark skin = workers = low social status
that's how eastern think, i think.
So how about tan sexy skin that those western want to be? It's also about the luxury treatment that only Richer people can posses.
Tan skin = tropical beaches = luxury vacation to tropical island.

northern indians who are fairer get looked upon as beautiful or more handsome.
in india, they have a caste system, where fairer indians get better treatment and opportunities.
indians, who want to get better treatment and opportunities, would also wish for fairer skin.
