Plastics, glass, silicon, precious metals. Some things would be very harmful to the environment if put into landfill, so they need careful recycling.

What happens to the phones?

The unwanted handsets donated to Oxfam are sold to our recycling partner, Corporate Mobile Recycling Ltd, who checks and tests them. Broken handsets are dismantled and the parts are recycled in the European Union.

This is important because mobile phones are made of plastic, precious metals and some toxic materials which could cause serious damage to the environment if they were to end up in a landfill site. For example, one mobile battery could be powerful enough to pollute 600,000 litres of water! Working handsets are sold on as second hand phones and are re-used in countries around the world.

Phones are composed of "normal" electronic materials similar to what your VCR, Camcorder, TV has. Which means its basic components are the following:

1. Printed Circuit Board (the board with etched copper strips, which serves as your main wiring as well as tha base which will hold the electronic components)
2. Integrated Circuits (Chips which have pre designed electronic circuits that allows for a more compact device) These will probably be the microcontroller, modulator, hybrid amplifier, power controller, etc.
4. Discrete Components (LED, resistors, capacitors, inductors, etc) necessary to support the integrated circuits or, if in the absence in an IC, to replace it.
3. Liquid Crystad Display (your phone's main display device, the days of the LED are long gone)
4. User input device (most are capacitance pads, and a good number nowadays employ the touch screen)
5. Filters and Antenna
6. Speaker and Microphone
7. Casing (plastic, metal, cabon fiber etc. that will hold everything together.)
