People make mistakes unknowingly and before the realise the same it is too late. The lyricsist has very aptly penned down one of the most common occurence with all of us.

Most people take decisions without putting in careful thoughts and then regret the same for the rest of their life.

This is probably why they say "If's and But's make your life".
